About
Søuld
Søuld is a Danish company providing eco-friendly and sustainable building materials made from eelgrass. Founded in 2010 by architects Tobias Øhrstrøm and Pi Fabrin; engineers Gunnar Agerskov and Kirsten Lynge; and eelgrass thatcher Henning Johansen, Søuld provides designers and architects with a renewable and recyclable alternative to traditional acoustic panels. Their use of eelgrass as a building material carries on a centuries-old practice deeply rooted in Danish culture.
Engineered for residential and commercial spaces, Søuld’s products are designed to create calm and inviting atmospheres that bridge interiors with nature through organic surfaces and all-natural texture. For more than a decade, the team at Søuld has collaborated with designers, manufacturers, and ecologists to develop renewable and acoustic products that offer excellent acoustic, thermal, and moisture-regulating properties, are highly resistant to fire, contain no toxic chemicals, and reduce carbon footprint by serving as CO₂ storage - and always with the health and well-being of the user at the top of mind.
“The historic houses on the island of Læsø have proven that nature can be deeply integrated and interact with buildings. I was immediately fascinated by this wild and unexplored material. The striking aesthetic of the houses in Læsø was the first thing that attracted me to eelgrass.”
“I thought that developing eelgrass products would be exciting because it would have such a strong relationship with where it comes from – the sea. I believe that the way people interact is influenced by the materials they are surrounded by.”
“At Søuld, we believe that the end-use must be considered to honor the story of eelgrass fully. That is why we are making products that can have a long life, be recycled, and be part of systems designed for repair, disassembly, and reuse.”
