About Eelgrass

The architectural application of eelgrass dates back to the 1600s when settlers of Læsø, a remote island off the northern coast of Denmark, would forge thick roof-thatching for their ‘seaweed houses.’

Eelgrass is a marine plant that reproduces annually in the sea, washes ashore, and is dried naturally on fields with the sun and wind. It’s a carbon-storing renewable resource with beautiful inherent qualities that add warmth and natural texture to interiors while providing excellent acoustics and a sustainable alternative to traditional building materials.

Carbon Storing

Eelgrass absorbs significant amounts of carbon while growing in the sea. After drifting ashore, eelgrass is collected and dried naturally in the sun and wind. This low impact process prevents it from decomposing and releasing carbon into the atmosphere, resulting in a carbon storing material.

Collected and Airlaid

Eelgrass is a natural resource that reproduces annually in the sea, washes ashore without human intervention, and is dried on nearby fields by the sun and wind. Working closely with local farmers and ecologists, Søuld has developed a responsible approach to eelgrass collection based on environmental protection and the preservation of eelgrass meadows.

Sound Absorbing

Eelgrass leaves are dried and pressed into boards that capture sound waves and reduce echo. These boards can then be transformed into wall and ceiling panels that help improve the acoustic experience in all interior environments.

Fire Resistant

Eelgrass has a naturally high mineral salt content, which effectively regulates humidity, provides long-term durability, and is highly fire resistant. Søuld Wall and Søuld Baffles meet Class A for ASTM E84.

Transparent

Sharing Spinneybeck’s passion for sustainability, Søuld strives to develop renewable products of the highest quality and lowest environmental impact. Søuld’s materials are responsibly sourced and produced in Denmark according to the strictest local environmental standards and industry certifications.

Fully Circular

Søuld Eelgrass products are designed to be fully circular and focus on environmental impact. With a history of over 300 years as a roofing material on the Danish island of Læsø, Eelgrass has proven it can stand the test of time. Eelgrass products are 100% recyclable and can later be returned to become a second generation of Eelgrass material.
