Seaport Science Center

Flow Makes Waves on the Boston Harbor

The Seaport Science Center in Boston, MA, was designed by CBT Architects to encourage creativity and collaboration. The expansive space enjoys scenic views of the Boston harbor in a rapidly developing area considered the city’s most desirable life-science neighborhood. The reimagined lobby combines an array of natural materials that play off the surrounding landscape, including a towering, custom-designed Flow installation in Linar Flexible Wood with a custom white oak veneer over natural MDF. The wall flows and undulates along the lobby’s twenty-foot entrance below a flowing ceiling installation, both of which mimic the building’s curved exterior.

A fitting nod to the space’s innovative inhabitants, Linar Flexible Wood features a complex incision process that allows it to have textile-like properties. The installation trickles over a custom-installed shelf in a communal seating area that fits snugly into the wall’s curves without disrupting the gentle flow and atmosphere.
