Design 406

Design 406, by mid-century visionary designer Erwin Hauer, is a carved wall system that combines the beauty of natural materials with the sophisticated curves core to his aesthetic. Highlighting a range of natural materials, Design 406 is available in five wood species, with the option to add painted color or Spinneybeck upholstery leather, allowing Hauer’s timeless designs to suit any space. This clever modular system is comprised of individual planks that come together to form an uninterrupted composition.

  • Maintenance
  • Wood: Use a very mild non-abrasive non-ammonia, and non-alcohol containing soap diluted in a room temperature water solution. Apply with a soft flannel cloth, followed by a dry cloth. Always wipe in the direction of the grain. Never use commercial cleaners, abrasives, solvents, or glass cleaner on any wood as it will wear away the finish. Never apply wax as this will interact with the finish.
  • Leather: For finished leathers, wipe with a cool, damp cloth. For tougher soiling, use a pH-balanced soap and rinse. Repeat, if needed. For naked (aniline) leathers, wipe entire surface with a soft cloth and cool water to even out any abrasions or stains. Do not spot rub, for it will darken only that area. Occasional use of Spinneybeck maintenance products is recommended. Other leather cleaners such as saddle soap or household cleaners that may contain harsh chemicals, alcohol or ink removers should never be used.
  • Variation
  • Wood: Wood is a natural material and minor changes in color are evidence of the 100% natural origin of the material.
  • Leather: Color variation of naked leathers may be more pronounced beyond the normal commercial range. A Cutting for Approval (CFA) is required for all orders.
  • Environmental
  • Wood: Contains no formaldehyde
  • CARB Compliant
  • Solid woods are inherently non-emitting
  • Leather: Leather is 100% Biodegradable/compostable

Erwin Hauer spent his life perfecting architectural screens and sculptures that celebrate the infinite continuous surface, known as Modular Constructivism. In 1950, this Austria-born sculptor began exploring modular sculptures, some of which lent themselves to architectural usage as room dividers and light-diffusing perforated walls. His light-diffusing walls and room dividers have been lauded as “quintessential works of modernism.”
